In the modern world, the boundaries between genres, brands, and various IPs are becoming increasingly blurred. The video game industry also takes part in modern trends, so developers are adding various crossovers to their creations. Sometimes they borrow elements even from other types of media. In this article, we present you with the most unusual crossovers between games and more.

Fortnite x God of War

Let’s start with the game that already has a separate article about its in-game events. Fortnite loves to borrow well-known pop culture images, and most of the time, it works like a charm. But when Kratos, the main character of God of War, appeared in the game, it caused a mixed reaction by users.

Most gamers familiar with Kratos’ history were extremely unhappy with the character’s portrayal in Fortnite. The God of War series focuses on his suffering at the hands of the Greek gods and consists almost entirely of rage and brutality. Therefore, the players can be understood when they saw Kratos’ funny emote dances in the battle royale. One way or another, we will remember such a crossover for a long time.

Final Fantasy x Assassin’s Creed

Fortunately, Fortnite creators are not the only ones to negotiate with competitors. The collaboration between Square Enix and Ubisoft, two well-known development studios, turned out to be much more successful. The companies prepared the audience for the upcoming crossover with the help of special posters that were given out to visitors at Gamescon. They jointly depict an assassin and a fantasy warrior. Does it ring a bell?

As it had turned out, Assassin’s Creed and Final Fantasy XV were connected by common elements. First, Square Enix added an assassin costume and unique tricks like a leap of faith to its creation. Then in the new game, Ubisoft added a quest from the main villain of FFXV Ardin. Thus, fans of both episodes were satisfied.

Rainbow Six x Rick and Morty

Ubisoft clearly understands the importance of crossovers in the modern world, as its online shooter Rainbow Six: Siege also often conducts them. The most recent one includes the popular animated series “Rick and Morty”. The game got “Pickle Rick” – a local meme among fans of the series. This is the result of a failed experiment by Rick, which is so loved by fans that now Smoke, one of the operatives of RS: S, will be able to try on his costume. It comes with a unique “fake” weapon, created by Rick himself.

World of Warships x Anime

Wargaming also takes part in global trends. Developers decided to introduce a completely unexpected crossover in their naval strategy – they added anime elements.

If you look closely, it was a very good move. Arpeggio of Blue Steel is a manga and anime about battles of naval fleets, so such a storyline fits perfectly into the concept of the game. As part of the crossover, new skins for ships and some other innovations have become available. It is worth noting that the developers did not make the update mandatory – you could install it as an optional mod.

Marvel vs. Capcom

If in all previous games’ crossovers were temporary, then in some cases they are the basis of the product. A typical example would be Marvel vs. Capcom fighting games series. It started back in 1996 on slot machines. At that time, the character roster only included X-Men on one side and Street Fighter heroes on the other. Twenty-five years later, Marvel vs. Capcom is still popular and now boasts most of the main characters from both companies.

One of the keys to the series’ success is a simple idea. The game takes children’s arguments like “who is stronger – a bear or a shark?” and gives an answer to them, but now with other “fighters”.

Kingdom Hearts

Square Enix took the Marvel vs. Capcom example to the next level, resulting in Kingdom Hearts. In this game, the entire plot focuses entirely on travels between the parallel worlds of the universes of Walt Disney and Final Fantasy. In each of them, the main characters fight with local villains, while not revealing the existence of other worlds. With such a huge setting, the plot of the series does not suffer, but, on the contrary, shines like a diamond. All of this caused the financial success of Kingdom Hearts, which guarantees us the release of a further sequel.

PayDay 2 x Medieval Age

This crossover was not a very loud or epic one, but it certainly was one of the strangest and most unexpected. PayDay 2 is a bank robbery simulator, and you could expect anything from it, but not a medieval setting.

Studio Overkill Software suddenly added knightly armor to the game along with melee weapons, and called all this “Gage Chivalry Pack”. Recovering from the initial surprise, the audience welcomed the unusual expansion. Therefore, even now, players are happy to beat the bank guards with two-handed swords.

As you can see, crossovers are very common in modern video games. And this is good, because thanks to them, gamers can discover new universes, from which everyone will only benefit.
